NTU is launching a new interdisciplinary school that merges its chemical and biomedical engineering school with the chemistry and biochemistry division from its college of sciences, the University announced Thursday (December 16).

The new School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB), slated for August 2022, will bring together students from the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (SCBE) and the division of Chemical and Biological Chemistry from the School of Physical and Mathematical Science (SPMS).

Students will be housed in the existing school buildings of SCBE and SPMS and given collaborative workspaces within the two buildings, said NTU on Thursday (Dec 16) in an email to students.

The new school will help integrate basic sciences and their engineering applications, said NTU President Subra Suresh and Deputy President and Provost Ling San in the email.

Students will stick to their existing degree programmes offered by their school, but the new college will bring “opportunities to revise and develop new courses and programmes to meet the evolving needs of industry and society”.

CCEB will also be helmed by a new Chair, who is yet to be appointed, said the professors.

They said the new school aims to “foster a tighter coupling” between basic sciences and how they are applied in engineering, for a more “holistic” education for students.

“Addressing some of the most pressing and complex challenges facing humanity inevitably calls for strong interdisciplinary approaches in pedagogy and research,” the professors said.
